Rissi Palmer on country music’s future

Invasion’s GRAMMY-nominated artist, Rissi Palmer, appeared on CNN recently to discuss controversy surrounding Beyoncé’s most recent release and foray into the country music scene. She confronted and expanded on the issues that make country music often an uphill battle for Black artists, poignantly referring to the resistance from the mainstream as “musical redlining”, and laying bare the facts of how Black artists receive limited time on the airwaves, and how this makes it extremely difficult to establish a presence in “mainstream” country music, despite POC artists having always been present in and instrumental to the building of the genre.

Rissi recently hosted CMT’s 2024 Next Women Of Country, and her podcast, Color Me Country Radio, sponsored by Apple Music, dives deeper into what it means to be a country musician of color. With her history of amplifying voices that may otherwise struggle to be heard due to systemic problems in the country music industry, as well as her stand-out catalogue of music, it’s no wonder that she’s the go-to expert on the subject.
